On January 5, 2025, the ELPIS Medical Wing hosted the much-anticipated Christian Physicians Fellowship under the theme “Anchored in Faith and Hope.” This event brought together a diverse group of medical professionals, all united in their commitment to faith-based practices in medicine. The atmosphere was charged with warmth, as participants engaged in meaningful discussions and shared personal experiences.
Setting the Tone
The gathering commenced with a heartfelt prayer led by Dr. Nufthanan, which set a tone of reverence and openness. This initial moment of reflection reminded everyone of the importance of surrendering our burdens to God.
Uplifting Worship
Following the prayer, attendees participated in a vibrant worship session orchestrated by talented teams from Jimma, St. Paul, Black Lion, and Korea Hospital. The music was not only uplifting but also served to deepen the spiritual connection among participants, allowing them to collectively express their faith and devotion.
Vision Sharing
The next segment featured a vision-sharing session led by Dr. Kirubel. He provided valuable insights into the objectives and future plans of the ELPIS Medical Wing. This session aimed to engage attendees in the ongoing mission of the organization, highlighting its sub-teams and the upcoming medical summit. Participants were encouraged to look forward to future fellowship meetings, which will be held bi-monthly.
Stress Management through Christian Principles
A key highlight of the event was an engaging discussion led by our esteemed guest speaker, Dr. Mehret, MD, a practicing psychiatrist and author of two influential books on stress management in the medical field. His presentation focused on navigating stress through Christian principles, resonating deeply with the audience.
Dr. Miheret began his speech with a thought-provoking question: “In the sequence of hope, faith, and love, which one serves as the precursor? Which one emerges first to guide us?” This inquiry set the stage for a deep exploration of these foundational elements in our lives and practices.
He emphasized that love is the cornerstone of hope and faith, quoting Francis William Bourdillon:
“The night has a thousand eyes, and the day but one; Yet the light of the bright world dies with the dying sun. The mind has a thousand eyes, and the heart but one: Yet the light of a whole life dies when love is done.”
His insights were both profound and relatable, encouraging participants with love to lean on their faith and keep their hope during anticipate challenging times. The discussion was enriched by interactions, as attendees shared their own challenges and the role that faith played in their lives.
Critical, Creative, and Contemplative Thinking
Dr. Mehret’s address highlighted the pressing challenges faced by the healthcare system, urging participants to adopt critical, creative, and contemplative thinking. He referenced the Book of Daniel, illustrating how Daniel and his companions faced adversity with wisdom and faith.
Critical Thinking: He illustrated how Daniel’s refusal (Dan. 1:8) to eat the king’s food was a critical decision rooted in his beliefs, leading to a healthier outcome for him and his companions. It exemplifies a way of thinking that involves connecting to the root of a problem and actively becoming a solution-maker.
Creative Thinking: Dr. Mehret encouraged attendees to adopt a lateral thinking approach, challenging them to devise innovative solutions to the problems within the healthcare system as in Daniel 2:1-24, the king had a troubling dream and demanded that his magicians and seers interpret it. When they failed to provide an answer, he threatened to execute them all. However, Daniel took the time to seek God in prayer, and God revealed the meaning of the dream to him. This illustrates the power of creative thinking—specifically, lateral thinking, which involves viewing problems from new perspectives to discover innovative solutions. Instead of merely complaining about challenges, we should turn to God for guidance, enabling us to enhance the healthcare system and become effective problem solvers.
Contemplative Thinking: On Daniel 4:4-19 the king saw another dream and Daniel took one hour to think and he revealed the dream. Subsequently, Dr. Mehret stressed the importance of taking time to reflect deeply, allowing for a more profound understanding of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals. From Daniel’s example, we learn the importance of taking time to thoughtfully consider the healthcare system in order to identify solutions. We should allow ourselves the space to reflect on what truly matters.
Engaging Discussions
A lively question-and-answer session followed, where participants voiced their thoughts and concerns. Topics ranged from mentoring relationships between senior and junior physicians to the importance of integrating faith into professional life. The dialogue reinforced the collective understanding that challenges in the healthcare system can be addressed through unity and shared purpose.
Reflection and Closing Remarks
Dr. Ruth provided a short reflection, emphasizing the importance of connecting with God as a foundation for healthy thinking. She reminded everyone that integrating faith into our professional lives enhances our productivity and effectiveness.
The evening concluded with another uplifting worship session, further uniting participants in their shared faith.
Refreshments and Networking
The final segment of the event allowed attendees to enjoy refreshments and engage in informal conversations. This time was invaluable for building relationships and reinforcing the idea that stress is not something we face alone; we have a supportive community grounded in faith.
As participants departed, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose, a lighter heart, and a profound appreciation for the strength that comes from faith and community.
